The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. Ernest Banks became the defining player of the Chicago Cubs during the 1950s and 1960s and one of the greatest power-hitting infielders in baseball history. After beginning his professional career in the Negro leagues, Banks joined the Cubs in 1953 and quickly established himself as an exceptional shortstop with rare home-run power. His enthusiasm, durability, and long association with Chicago made him the public face of the franchise, and his cheerful personality earned him the enduring nickname “Mr. Cub.”
Banks won consecutive National League Most Valuable Player Awards in 1958 and 1959 and became the first player in Cubs history to win the honor in back-to-back seasons. He hit 512 career home runs, drove in 1,636 runs, and was selected to fourteen All-Star Games. Banks also won a Gold Glove at shortstop and later moved to first base, extending his career while remaining one of Chicago’s most productive hitters. His combination of middle-infield defense and extraordinary power helped redefine expectations for the shortstop position.
