Card Statistics

Whitey Ford is presented in Helmar’s T4 series with the New York Americans at the completion of his pitching motion, his body leaning forward and his right leg extended behind him as his momentum carries him toward the plate. The white pinstriped Yankees uniform, dark blue cap, blue undersleeve, and dark stockings give the figure an unmistakable New York identity, while the long forward line of his torso and trailing leg create a strong sense of balance and controlled motion. Ford’s expression remains composed and focused, capturing the smooth, efficient delivery that became one of the defining characteristics of his pitching style.

The original artwork was painted by Natalia Valiukavich in watercolor. She develops the pinstriped uniform with pale cream, gray, ochre, and muted blue washes, allowing the fine vertical striping to remain visible across the bending figure. Stronger shadows through the torso, trouser folds, and planted leg help describe the forward shift of Ford’s weight, while the dark blue cap, undersleeve, and stockings provide the principal color accents. The overcast sky is especially important to the mood of the painting, with broad gray-blue clouds creating a subdued atmosphere above the distant outfield wall and spectators. The restrained background allows the extended pitching figure to remain dominant.

Edward Charles “Whitey” Ford became the greatest left-handed pitcher in New York Yankees history and one of the most accomplished postseason pitchers of the twentieth century. He joined the Yankees in 1950 and quickly established himself as a remarkably dependable starter, combining precise control, changing speeds, and intelligent pitch selection rather than relying solely on overpowering velocity. His calm demeanor and ability to pitch effectively in important games made him a central figure on the Yankees clubs that dominated the American League during the 1950s and early 1960s.

Ford won the Cy Young Award in 1961 after going 25–4 and also earned World Series Most Valuable Player honors in 1961. He was selected to ten All-Star Games and finished his career with a 236–106 record and a 2.75 earned-run average. His .690 career winning percentage remains among the highest for pitchers with substantial major-league careers. Ford appeared in eleven World Series and won six championships with New York, setting long-standing World Series pitching records, including 33 consecutive scoreless innings.

Numbered #23, the Ford card presents one of the Yankees’ most important pitchers in a pose that emphasizes the smooth finish of his delivery. The forward lean, extended trailing leg, pinstriped uniform, muted ballpark background, and dramatic overcast sky give card #23 a particularly restrained and atmospheric character within the T4 series. Ford’s 236 victories, 1961 Cy Young Award, six World Series championships, exceptional winning percentage, and enduring reputation as the premier pitcher of the Yankees dynasty make him one of the most historically significant and collectible subjects in the issue. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974.
